Nowadays, wireless communication from mobile phones to Internet messengers have made it possible for us to communicate in real time regardless distance. But in a 1906 issue of popular British magazine "Punch," it has envisioned a quite similar technology where a couple communicating to each other on a portable wireless telegraph with an antenna on the top of their head.
In the caption: "These two figures are not communicating with one another. The lady receives an amatory message, and the gentleman some racing results."
Interestingly, people are actually distracted with modern communication device as friends going in night out tend to send messages through instant messengers on their smartphones instead of actually talking to each other face to face. It's a reminder that the idea of technology leading to a breakdown in "authentic" human interaction is a worry not solely limited to our age.
