Although the brickphone appeared in the 1980's, conceptualising the idea of a hi-tech mobile telephone system was already introduced in the classic 1960's sci-fi favourite Star Trek. Whether you're a fan or not, the Tricorder has been the most sophisticated handheld device there was. It basically records and analyzes data and used for sensor scanning.
Fast forward, our smartphones can now do the same thing and even better. Although not the same device, smartphones are versatile - we no longer have to use it just to call someone or send a message. With so many apps available, the Tricorder, in some way, is perhaps the forerunner of today's favorite gadget.
Mobile technologies in the 60's do look like toys! It's amazing how technology has changed in a few years nowadays...
