We have come to a point that we would be building cities up in the skies as our planet will become more crowded that ever before. There is a growing interest in the so-called sky cities. Many have started their ambitious projects from Tokyo to Dubai but a different kind of horizontal city was envisioned in Russia.
Designed by Norman Foster, the planned Crystal Island project in Moscow is expected to have 27 million square feet of floor space and will rise to a height of 1,476 feet. It will have a tent-like superstructure that will also serves as a breathable skin and thermal buffer for the main building so that it will shield the interior spaces from the extreme weather conditions. The skin will be sealed in winter to minimize heat loss during winter and opened during the summer so that it cools down the interior. Also integrated is a park so that it will provide a whole range of activities for the inhabitants.
So for a gargantuan structure that is expected to house a million people or even more, it is expected to have a diverse collection of cultural, exhibition, commercial, office and residential spaces. Everything will be in-house where people go to work, children have to study, and housewives to go shopping. And to conserve energy, it will produces its own with its wide array of built-in solar panels and wind-turbines. Waste disposal will maximize the recycling capacity so that low-carbon footprint will be achieved.
