We all know that GPS helps us reach our destination but what if we use it to let cars drive for ourselves? Well in the 1990 futuristic thriller "Total Recall," Douglas Quaid (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) took a Martian cab driven by a robot. Known as Johnny Cabs, these cabs would be possible now that Google is advocating the use of such technology. In fact, there are now three states where self-driven cars are legal for testing purposes.

Imagine the streets of the future with automated cars with driving a bit more safe and efficient than humans. In this scenario, we would eliminate the need for taxi drivers thereby allowing commuters to travel door-to-door in privacy and comfort at a fraction of the cost. In the future, public transit as we know it becomes a relic and private vehicle ownership dwindles away. Car designs mutate and urban land uses are reconfigured. This revolution is said to be just a few years down the road.
