Science fiction writers and political scientists have always been on the debate on when we will have a world government? Few of us have realized that the process has already began and it is what you called - globalization. Technology has shrunk the world and connected us like never before. The question now is how and when?

We have already entertained the prospect of colonizing another planet and restart Earthly life in an alien environment. Think about the time when Europeans started colonizing the New World and eventually these colonies became their own nations. So if humans create a new society on Mars, does it mean that they will create their own government? Why not Earth? Do we have to wait for first alien contact before we build a singular human government in this planet?

We need world government for the same reason that we need government in general. It is our basic human social need - to agree on our collective goods by utilizing and appropriating human and natural resources. Climate change is inevitable and the Earth will probably meet its untimely demise so does it mean that a global government will only happen then when the human race faces extinction? If so, who will be the leader of the global government and where would be the capital city?

It is believed that an Earth government has to eliminate corruption and lawlessness in order to finally deal with the basic social issues and the threat of climate change. Once the Earth leader finally achieves that then we have to launch civilization-scale projects including the peaceful and controlled colonization of the solar system.

An integrated globalized political system will probably be like that of the European Union as we erode borders and other forms of division. Everything will be consolidated in the future and the concept of nationality will become obsolete. Of course, this is a dark side to having a global government as a singular and all-powerful regime will take hold and be brutally oppressive. Some experts have viewed a global government as New World Order wherein every aspect of human life will be controlled by one central, omnipresent authority we called Big Brother.
