British design firm Atkins Design has designed the InterContinental Shimao Hotel to make use of a beautiful water-filled quarry in the Songjiang district outside of Shanghai. The £345 million complex has 370 spacious rooms in over 19 floors built in an innovative design that utilize green roofing system, geothermal energy and underwater areas for a five-star restaurant, posh guest rooms for VIPs, and even a glass-walled aquarium. Since it is built on a quarry, it provides an ideal setting for sports and leisure activities such as swimming, water sports, rock climbing and even bungee-jumping.
Aside from that, a swimming pool and sports center that will also be built inside the hotel as well as several themed restaurants, a large banquet hall and conference rooms for business meetings. In order to blend with the landscape, the eco-friendly roof will have trees planted on top. Guest rooms will be rented at around £200 per night.
Although slated for completion by May 2009, it was later moved to 2017, the structure will blend in with the landscape with an eco-friendly green roof with trees. Until now, the hotel still remains a concept.
