Skyscrapers are often thought as the monuments of human achievement as past civilizations and modern societies are building ever higher buildings. Architecture designs have changed from defensive castle battlements and towers to high-rise apartments and office spaces.
Concepts of futuristic mega urban structures have always been in everyone's mind since man dreamed about replicating the mythical Tower of Babel. The megastructures of the future resemble alien spacecrafts and science fiction biomechanical wonders. What do these gigantic imaginations look like?
Dams would never be like monolithic public work but more like awe-inspiring landmarks. Imagine the Hoover Dam re-imagined as a complicated web of maze towering high up the water.
How about the Hydrogenase project as conceptualized by Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut? This elegant out-of-this-world wonder he drew up was a skyscraper-airship hybrid wherein the structure floats in the air and feeds on green algae "energy."
Imagine futuristic dirigibles and airships docking in a tall observation deck as envisioned by a Romanian design firm Dorin Stefan Birou Arhitectura. It would be like the airports of the future as air traffic becomes so congested that we have to build more airships that can carry more passengers than ever before.
If you come to think of it, the airships are like bubbles that are attracted to stick in giant straws. Tunnels and elevators transport people to the airships and back to the ground. This concept can be likened to pneumatic tubes because it's much more efficient than transporting large number of people via traditional mass transportation services.
Cellular structure like that of the mitochondria has influenced designers to build structures that resembles microorganisms that we see on the microscope. Take the case of the Czech national library, the Selfridge building and the Bullring complex. Taipei will soon have its share of alien-like megastructures.
