In 2074, time travel is invented and is immediately outlawed, however, realizing its potential and what it can contribute to mobsters' activities, it becomes available to those who can pay for it in the black market.
Mobsters used time travel to kill people, sending individuals from the future back to year 2044 to be killed by assassins they call "loopers." When a looper's contract ends or what they call as "closing the loops," these assassins' old selves are sent to the past to be killed by their younger selves. Failure to do so calls for execution of the young looper.
A lead mobster, also a telekenetic whose identity is hidden under the name Rainmaker, suddenly took over after killing five other mob leaders and orders for the closure of all loops, hence, fast tracking the lives of loopers in 2044.
Joe, a looper, finally meets his old self but failed to kill him. Old Joe reveals that he has information regarding the Rainmaker and plans to kill his child self. However, unsure of the Rainmaker's true identity, he plans to kill three children whose identities are directly related to the mob leader.
Old Joe aims to do so to forbid the Rainmaker from killing his wife. But the Young Joe was indifferent to Old Joe's reason, intending to kill his older self.
As the story progresses, the Old Joe succeeds in finding who among the kids would become the Rainmaker. Old Joe plans to kill the child's mother as well and Young Joe who realized how the situation would lead to current events, decides to change the future then kills himself. Old Joe suddenly disappears and the kid and his mother were saved.
