The post-war period kicked off with huge optimism under the uncertain clouds of the Cold War just as the World War 2 veterans settled down and started their family. It was the time when the baby boom generation are in full swing with ordinary Americans envisioning a future with dream hospitals with high level of innovation. Future baby boomers were seen by their mothers through a drawer in the wall while fathers caught a final smoke. There were no problems with unwanted visitors either, as everyone was locked in by remote control.
Interestingly, pneumatic tubes are relics of the past that is still being in used in some American hospitals out there. Sending medical records to specialist doctors is now just a click away. X-ray machines seem like a modular modern marvel but nowadays, sophisticated scanning technologies now allow doctors to see inside your body.
Removing the human element in health care remains a challenge even in the advancement of technology. Although real-time vital signs monitoring is now possible, we just can't cure someone on a press of a button.
There were less people then so doctors and nurses do have all the luxury of time to take care of the patient. People from the 1950s will be surprised to see how our hospitals are crowded to the brim and patients having have to wait longer before being taken cared of.
