The 281-foot Trinity Church was New York's tallest skyscraper in 1881 as shown on the Thomas Nast illustration in Harper's Weekly. His vision for future Manhattan was soon eclipse until the North Tower of the World Trade Center became the city's tallest building at 1,368. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack and the Empire State Building regain its throne as the tallest structure at 1,250 feet.
It is expected that the often-delayed $3.1-billion One World Trade Center (formerly known as the Freedom Tower) will replace the World Trade Center as New York's tallest at 1,776 feet.
